Information for Victoria University Students
More information on class sizes here
Why are Victoria University staff going on Strike?
- Staff are facing the largest ever mass-sacking in Australian university history
- Over 270 staff face the sack – this is a quarter of teaching staff and a fifth of general staff.
- University management did not consult staff or students.
- The strike is a last resort because the University management has refused to negotiate with the staff union.
How will the strike affect me?
- If the job cuts go through, class sizes at Victoria University will become the worst in Australia.
- Courses and subjects will be cut, which could affect your career.
- The Melton and Sunbury campuses will be closed.
- Staff are striking to ensure that class sizes don’t get any worse, courses don’t get cut and campuses don’t close.
This strike could affect my studies
- The strike days have been structured to reduce the impact on students as much as possible.
- The Vice Chancellor can end the strikes now by negotiating with the staff union.
- Strike action is the last resort to ensure that class sizes don’t get worse, that courses aren’t cut and campuses aren’t closed.
How can I help?
- Send an email to the Vice Chancellor, telling her that you oppose the sackings, course cuts and campus closures.
- Talk with your lecturer and tutor about the issue.
